A Golf Grip for Beginners - The New Golfer Starter Series Lesson #1

If you've never held a golf club before, don't overcomplicate it. A good beginner grip should feel comfortable, secure and relaxed.
Here's how to get your hands on the club in FIVE SIMPLE STEPS.

Step 1 - Lead hand
(for right handers)

Start with your left hand. Let the grip sit more across your fingers rather than deep in the palm. This is the most common error new golfers make when the gripping the club, it needs to be sitting at the base of your fingers not the palm of your hand. If you are a left hander do exactly the same but in your right hand.

Step 2 - Position the Thumb

Don't worry about strong grips, weak grips or changing your hand position yet. You're just trying to create a comfortable starting position so place your thumb slightly to the right of center on the grip. Just keep it very simple to start with.

Step 3 - Add the Trail Hand

Now introduce the right hand. See how it is coming underneath and around the grip. The hands should feel as though there working together rather than being two separate hands gripping the club.

Step 4- Joining The Hands

3 common golf grips, the overlap grip, the interlocking grip and the baseball grip

There are several ways to connect your hands. The overlapping and interlocking grips are the most common, while some beginners find the 10-finger baseball grip comfortable. Don't worry about finding the “perfect” one immediately. Many beginners start with the interlocking grip as it brings the hands together immediately. Some eventually move onto the overlap grip particularly if you have bigger hands.   I have included a glove on the golfers left hands so you can clearly see where the fingers interlock in on image 2 and overlap on image 1. This example is for a right-handed golfer.

Step 5 - Grip Pressure - How Hard Should You Hold a Golf Club

Hold the club securely enough that it won't move around in your hands, but don't squeeze it. Your hands, wrists and forearms should still feel relaxed.
